WhoNews Notifications Restored

WhoNews notifications have now been restored for iOS. A brand new notification service has been installed on the server and hopefully this will be far more reliable than the old service.

Any issues or problems just drop me a line at appsupport@moonboom.com

WhoNews notifications

WhoNews notification are temporarily disabled due to a recent update on the WhoNews server and changes introduced by Apple to the push notification system.

I am working to restore notifications as soon as I can. Please accept my apologies for the break in service.

WhoNews Downtime Today

On Monday October 20th from 8am the WhoNews server is changing its internet address. Depending on your ISP provider it may take around 24 hours before you start receiving WhoNews updates again.

No changes are required to the WhoNews apps but you may receive news notifications but not see the article listed in WhoNews. This will continue until the new server address has propagated across the internet.

I apologise for the break in service which is beyond my control.

WhoNews v3.5.1 and Lite v2.5.1 for iOS Now Available

Both WhoNews and WhoNews Lite are now available at the App Store and fix an issue which stopped them launching on the iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S and iPad 3.

Thanks to all those who contacted me and took part in a beta test of the new version/fix and a special mention for Jessica for her support throughout the testing of the new version of WhoNews.

If you like the new layout and UI then please leave a review at the App Store, if you don't then drop me a line at appsupport@moonboom.com and I'll try and address your feedback in the next version.

WhoNews v3.5 / Lite 2.5 Update

The latest version of WhoNews and WhoNews Lite, isn't launching on some older devices. I've identified the problem which is due to the smaller amount of memory on these devices. Devices affected include iPhone 4, 4S and iPad 3.

I have a fix which is being submitted to the App Store today and should restore normal service in around a week.

If you can't live without WhoNews then contact me at appsupport@moonboom.com and I can sign you up on my beta programme and get you up and running with in an hour or so.

Accept my apologies for this issue, I endeavour to support as many devices, both old and news as possible and have to depend on the Apple simulators for some of the older devices. Sometimes the simulators don't match the real hardware as I'd like.

As with all regenerations, the first few hours can be a somewhat of a roller coaster.

Deep Breath.....

WhoNews notifications

I just thought I’d give a few tips regarding notifications after receiving a two star review in the States, where a user complained of too many notifications.

Notifications are something people love or hate. Some fans want a constant stream of news pushed to them, others want to browse at their leisure.

WhoNews allows you to choose which notifications you want to receive, if any. Simply go to the settings page and scroll down. There are four categories of notifications you can turn on or off. Any changes you make may take around 30 minutes before notifications stop coming through depending on your network conditions and notifications already in the Apple Servers.

As always any problems or questions just use the send Contact Developer button, especially before leaving a poor review.

    WhoNews Notification Tips

Checking the reviews of WhoNews this morning on iTunes, I’d received a 1 star review. The review said “Can't stand the constant updates. Receiving updates even after all updates disabled. Uninstalling product”

This really is a shame as the user hadn’t contacted me to see if I could help but had taken the time to write a negative review. WhoNews has a “Contact Developer” button on the Settings tab, so nothing could have been easier.

So I thought I’d give a little explanation on how to configure WhoNews notifications. Firstly you can configure which notifications you receive on the Settings tab but you need to be in connected to the internet as WhoNews contacts the notification server to tell it what your preferences are. It does this the instant the you change a setting.

Once you’ve changed a setting it may take a little while to stop receiving those notifications as they may already be queued in the Apple Push Notification System.

Whenever WhoNews starts it resends your settings to the Notification server just in case your app and the server are out of sync. So if your notification settings seem incorrect, try killing WhoNews and then starting it again.

Don’t forget if you want to disable sounds, change the way notifications are displayed or disable ALL notifications from WhoNews you have to do this via your iOS device Settings -> Notifications -> WhoNews which is outside WhoNews itself.

Above all if you have a problem with WhoNews please just contact me, I will always strive to help. WhoNews has received over 70 5 Star reviews from around the world and it is a record I’d like to maintain if given the chance.

    Thanks

    Paul.

    WhoNews Notification Update

The WhoNews notification issue where repeated notifications were being sent has been identified as a performance issue on the server. I’ve implemented a fix and will be testing today, so I apologise for any duplicate notifications you may receive today.

    *Update*

The fix appears to be working well and normal service has been resumed.

    WhoNews 2.05 iOS Released

WhoNews 2.05 for iOS is now available from the App Store.

Notifications have been stopped for previous versions of WhoNews.

This version includes support for the new notifications pushed out by the latest version of the WhoNews server. This means notifications are:
    • Generated as they are detected by WhoNews server and not on the current hourly basis.
    • Notifications for News, Blogs, Podcasts and Special/Art streams
    • Control from within WhoNews on the settings page to choose what notifications, if any, you want to receive.

Here is a image of the settings page:

    IMG_1009

    WhoNews Push Notifications

Over the past few months there have been periods where the notifications pushed to the WhoNews have stopped for short periods. This has been down to service interruptions by the push notification service provider used by WhoNews.

Rest assured I’ve been looking into this and I’m working on modifications to make the service not only more reliable but also more frequent. I’m currently developing my own service which interfaces directly to Apple to send notifications. This also removes a limit of 1 million notifications a month which WhoNews has to use. Some months WhoNews has hit this limit.

The new server modifications will allow me to provide more notifications in future versions of WhoNews. However I appreciate that some users love notifications and a constant stream of updates and others hate them. So future versions of WhoNews will allow you to fully configure notifications.

I’m currently testing the next version of WhoNews and the update service and will keep you informed of developments.

    WhoNews 2.04 iOS Released

WhoNews 2.04 is now available to download. This release includes the new iPad retina icons and also fixes a problem on iPads using iOS 5.1 which caused WhoNews to crash in portrait orientation.

    WhoNews v2.0.4 iOS Update

I’ve just updated WhoNews to support the new iPad 3 retina icons and also fix a problem on iPads using iOS 5.1. When using WhoNews in portrait mode you may experience a crash and WhoNews quitting.

In the meantime I recommend using WhoNews in landscape on an iPad running this version 5.1 of iOS. The new version should be released within a week.

    WhoNews v2.0.3 iOS Released

WhoNews v2.0.3 for iOS has been released at the App Store. New in this release is:

    • Fixes for Facebook link sharing. It also supports single sign in if you have the FB app installed.
    • Uses iOS5 Twitter integration on those platforms running iOS5
    • Evernote support is added
    • Sending links by SMS/iMessage supported.
    • Support for Delicious has been removed.

    WhoNews push notifications update

Push notifications have been down for over 15 hours now with no response from the engineers at the service provider.

I am continuing to chase them but at the moment have no idea when the problem will be fixed. In parallel I am looking to move away from the service provider and build my own notification servers.

    I will keep you informed.

    WhoNews for Android Released

WhoNews for Android is now available at the Android Market.

This initial version provides news, blogs, podcasts and the special content areas for Android users using the same news feeds that iPhone users have enjoyed for so long now.

The price search features and offline browsing that iPhone users enjoy will come in a later version but for now during the Christmas period you can enjoy the very latest news on Doctor Who on your droid.

The initial price is £1.25 in the UK, slightly lower than the iPhone version to reflect the lack of features currently, so it is a good opportunity to buy the app at a cheaper price and upgrade later next year.

Just search for WhoNews in the Android Market or follow this

    WhoNews for Android

Work has now begun on WhoNews for Android and I will post regular updates on progress. In the meantime I thought I’d warn you that somebody has a “Who News” app in the Android Market Place and is trying to jump on the iPhone WhoNews following.

This app is no way associated with WhoNews and has no access to the WhoNews server for all the news, blogs and podcast channels.

When WhoNews is released for Android I’ll let you know right here and it will offer the same quality of news as the iPhone version.

    WhoNews how to disable alerts

I’ve had a few enquires on how you can turn off the the push notification alerts in WhoNews.

Notification settings are handled outside of WhoNews but here is how to do it:

    1. Tap Settings on the iPhone/iPad Screen
    2. Tap Notifications
    3. Scroll to WhoNews and tap it to configure notifications just for WhoNews
    4. Select whether you just want the alert sound off or the alert to be disabled as well. Badges are not currently used by WhoNews.

If you need further help just contact me using the Contact Developer button in WhoNews.

    More WhoNews notifications

WhoNews receives notifications of news updates and now I have also added blogs and podcasts. Each update is either prefixed with News:, Blogs: or Podcast: to indicate where you can find the update.

I’m also pushing all the news, blogs and podcast updates to my twitter feed @Who_News so this can be a great account to follow if you want to stay in touch with all the latest news.

The headline page now also displays the latest headlines for News, Blogs and Podcasts. You can take a look here

WhoNews 2.0 is now available at the App Store, so check for updates on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

During the coming days I will migrate some of the current sites from news into their appropriate sections.

New screenshots are available on the site here and under the iPad section here

The changes are subtle to WhoNews 2.0 but significantly enhanced the app. Firstly you’ll notice the new content selector on the right of nav bar. It has three buttons (from left to right) News, Blogs and Podcasts. The Most Recent and Sites view both have this control and the view content will change accordingly. So sites like Kasterborous, Doctor Who News Page, Whovianet will appear under the News section, the likes of Life, Doctor Who and Combom move into the blog section along with Tachyon TV and naturally all podcasts move into the podcast section.

This should allow less prolific content generating sites, not to be swamped by other prolific sites and increase their visibility to Who fans.

WhoNews now has its own dematerialising police box which is displayed when news, blogs or podcast data is being downloaded. So the icon will come and go as you switch views to display the downloading state.

Also new in WhoNews 2.0 is the last updated indicator. If you pull down the Most Recent view it will display the time and date of the last update and allow you to force a download of the currently selected section (news, blogs or podcasts)

When you first launch WhoNews 2.0 you will be asked whether you want push notifications. Push notifications send you alerts of new articles only from sites listed under the News section. This is currently to prevent swamping users with lots of alerts. However if requested I may add push notifications for blogs and podcasts as well. You can configure whether you want sounds with alerts under your notification section in the iPhone/iPad Settings area under WhoNews. As WhoNews sends alerts 24 hours a day you might want to disable the sound...

I hope it has been worth the wait.

    WhoNews 2.0 ready for release

WhoNews 2.0 is now with Apple and just waiting for its release which I expect to be next week.

    Countdown to WhoNews 2.0 begins

The long awaited upgrade to version 2.0 of WhoNews will be released in the coming week for review by Apple. The new version easily trebles the number of news sources of the current version by including blogs and podcasts. The total number of sites scanned by the new WhoNews server currently exceeds 120, providing a constant feed of news, reviews and discussion.

Finally WhoNews gets push notifications which I’ve been testing with iOS5 and the new message centre. All I can say is what a great feature Apple has added and I’m finding WhoNews news alerts on my iPhone’s locked screen invaluable for keeping up to speed.

Once thing I’ve had to do is raise the price of WhoNews back to $1.99/£1.49 to help cover the cost of push notifications and the new improved servers.

Check back for more news soon...
